Cookies and similar browser technologies can remember information on your device. This edition uses local storage for two specific purposes. It does not use BITS advertising cookies, analytics trackers or automatic social-media embeds.
Your choices
The banner offers equally prominent options to accept or reject optional storage. You can also customise the reading-list choice. Articles, search and navigation work whether you accept or reject.
| Storage key | Purpose | Duration & choice |
|---|---|---|
| bits.consent.v1 | Remembers the choice you make, its date and the version of this notice. It is stored only after you make a choice. | Essential to remember that preference, for up to 180 days. Expiry is checked when you visit. |
| bits.reading-list.v1 | Stores identifiers of articles you choose to save on this device. It is not sent to BITS. | Optional. Used only when you allow reading-list preferences. Removed on withdrawal or when consent expires and you revisit. |
Changing your mind
Use the Cookie settings link in the footer to reject optional storage or untick reading-list preferences. Existing saved articles on that device will be removed. Clearing your browser’s site data also removes the list and your recorded choice. If your browser blocks storage, you can still read the site; choices may last only for the current page.
External links and hosting
Links to LinkedIn, Instagram, sources and email apps open services outside this site. Their own privacy and cookie practices apply when you visit them. Privately shared hosting may also require provider authentication and associated security storage. Those account functions are controlled by the provider, rather than by the BITS reading-list switch.
What about the browser cache?
The normal browser cache keeps downloaded page files so a later visit can load faster. It is different from an optional tracking cookie or our reading-list preference. You can manage cached files in your browser settings.
If we add other services
Adding analytics, embedded social content or advertising would require a new assessment, an updated notice and any necessary consent before those technologies load. Accepting the current reading-list option is not blanket consent to future tracking.
